STAND-IN (2003) visualizes and maps but also reshuffles the connections between the members of a group. By working with pre-determined formal decisions subdued social relations come to the surface and new ones emerge. The project comprises diagrams, folders and four photographic group portraits. Those portrayed in the photos form part of the extended network of Secession, an artists’ association and exhibition house in Vienna. The seven painters, bankers, printers, and members or employees of the Secession are photographed in their own working environment and chosen on a random basis (two from the top of the list provided, two from the bottom and three from the middle). A 1988 photograph of seven friends titled Sessions no. 06 functions as a blueprint for the composition of the group portraits.
